Transmission Maintenance

There are a number of different ways that you can work towards maintaining your transmission properly and help keep it from requiring extensive repairs or servicing. One of the most crucial things you can do, especially if you have an automatic transmission, is to check on the state of the transmission’s fluid. The fluid on the dipstick should not smell burnt, nor should it show any metallic particles or dirt. Both of these conditions can indicate that your transmission might need either a fluid flush or other type of servicing. Checking fluid after a long trip or one where you were towing a trailer is highly recommended. If you regularly tow anything heavy, consider installing a transmission cooler to help keep the fluid from breaking down under heat.

Like engine oil, transmission fluid and the transmission filter need to be periodically changed. The exact interval will be listed in your car or truck’s owner’s manual, but it’s important not to ignore this requirement. It’s also crucial to deal with any strange behavior or transmission malfunctions as quickly as possible. Hoping that a problem will simply go away on its own almost always results in an expensive trip to the garage for repairs. Periodic Transmission Check-Ups
