Here at Aztec Auto Repair & Muffler, all of our Auto Repair Technicians are ASE Certified. What exactly does this mean in terms of the quality of your automotive repair?

ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence, and those three little letters are some of the most powerful in the industry. Founded in 1972, the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is an organization dedicated towards standardizing and validating the skills and repair techniques of mechanics across the United States. They have spent decades developing a system that ensures that the best mechanics and technicians are not only recognized for their knowledge but are also properly trained in how to work on a wide variety of vehicles.

How does ASE Certification Work?

The ASE system works through a series of tests and programs that evaluate each individual mechanic. In order to become ASE Certified in a certain area, such as engine performance, air conditioning repair, or suspensions systems, a mechanic or technician must not only pass an exam but also demonstrate 2 years of work experience relating to that subject. In addition, due to the changing nature of the technologies used in the automotive industry, ASE Certification only lasts for 5 years before a mechanic must re-test themselves and prove that they have kept up with the latest innovations that have made their way to the car and truck market.

There are many different types of ASE certification, and a mechanic can choose to write as many exams as they are qualified for. These tests are not easy, and 30% of all mechanics who attempt them fail to pass. Mixing a combination of paper tests and computer-based training, ASE Certification is a living, breathing component of the industry.
